What is Hyperhydrosis?
Hyperhydrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating. Hyperhydrosis commonly affects areas of the body that have high levels of sweat glands including:
Underarms (Axillary hyperhidrosis)
Palms of the hands (Plamar hyperhydrosis)
Soles of the feat (Plantar hyperhydrosis)
Face and forehead (Craniofacial hyperhydrosis
For people who have primary hyperhydrosis, the excessive sweating happens without major triggers such as heat or strenuous exercise, often soaking through clothing and becoming evident which typically interferes with everyday tasks.
How Does Botox Stop Excessive Sweating?
While most people associate Botox with smoothing out wrinkles, Botox is also FDA-approved to treat severe primary axillary hyperhydrosis, also known as excessive arm sweating.
Botox works by blocks the release of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger that signals your sweat glands to turn on. By temporarily blocking this nerve signal locally, the sweat glands in the treated area are safely turned "off".
Is it safe? Yes. Treating localized areas allows for improvement in areas that cause issue, while maintaining the rest of your body's overall ability to cool itself or excrete toxins. The untreated areas of your body will continue to sweat.
Common signs you may be dealing with hyperhydrosis include:
Soaking through shirts shorty after getting dressed.
Anxiety about visible sweat marks or body odor.
Needing to change your clothes multiple times a day due to sweat marks.
Irritation of skin or discomfort due to persistent dampness from sweating.
Common Treatment Areas
Neuromodulators can treat a variety of areas for excessive sweating. Axillary treatment of the underarms remains the primary, FDA-approved area to treat. However, there are other areas providers can treat off-label.
Primary treatment areas include:
Underarms (Palmar Hyperhidrosis)
Palms of Hands
Soles of Feet (Plantar Hyperhidrosis)
Additional areas that can be treated:
The upper lip
Under the Breats (Inframammary Sweating)
Face, Scalp, and Hairline (Craniofacial Hyperhidrosis)
The right treatment plan depends on your anatomy and symptoms. An experienced provider will assess your anatomy and history, and recommend an approach tailored to your specific goals.
What to Expect During Treatment
It can be helpful to know some things you can expect during your appointment.
Before: Your appointment starts with a consultation to discuss your medical history, symptoms, and confirm Botox is the right treatment for you. Prior to treatment provider will clean and sanitize the area, and often mark the areas to treat with a small dot. Some providers offer numbing cream, but most patients find they don't need it.
During: Treatment itself is quick, typically just 10-15 minutes. Small amounts of product are injected using a ultra-fine needle into the targeted areas. Most people describe the injections as a tiny pinch and are able to tolerate the procedure well. The number of injections varies depending on which areas you're treating.
After: There is minimal downtime. You can return to most normal activities immediately. Small bumps at the injection site usually resolve within 15 minutes. It is advised to avoid strenuous excursive, hot tubs, saunas, or heavy sweating for 24 hours.
Results and Timeline
Onset: Most people start noticing changes within 3-5 days as the product begins taking effect. Full results typically become visible around 10-14 days after treatment.
Peak Results: Around the two-week mark, you'll see the full effect of your treatment. This is a good time for a follow-up appointment if you're new to neuromodulators, in case any touch-ups are needed for best result.
Duration: Results usually last patients 4-12 months. However, results can vary by person, product, and treatment area. Some metabolize the product faster than others, or require higher dosages.
Maintenance: To maintain your results, plan for treatments at regular intervals once results fade.
